Valuable RSS Feed Tips!

By: Larry L Miller

Since most of my online business is related to promoting my clients websites to "Top Positions on Google" many of my inquiries are from individuals who are just starting their online marketing venture or those who have tried to market online but are stumped on what to do next. Many of those individuals are familiar with most of the terms used in marketing, such as domains, hosting, and other common terms we hear every day, but few know about RSS feeds.

One of the most questioned terms, especially from those who are somewhat familiar with marketing often ask what is; RSS feeds, what are they and what is their function is regard to successful online marketing.

Many of those inquiring don't even know what the acronym RSS stands for. There are two different answers you will hear depending on who you talk to. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or when first introduced to the internet in the late 90's was referred to as Rich Site Summary. You will seldom hear this term used anymore except from some of the old timer in marketing.

The explanation of RSS according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI or by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process."

RSS feeds are nothing new to the internet, however, feeds have been neglected by many online marketers simply because the marketer didn't understand the process and didn't see the value of this powerful marketing tool. The purpose of an RSS feed is to gather information from different sources and provide that information to the readers desktop with a click of the orange colored feed icon. This saves the user a tremendous amount of time by not having to visit different websites individually to gather information. RSS feeds let individuals see new content that has been added to their favorite websites without having to open the website. What a great way to get the information you want without all the hassles of doing the research.

Feeds can be used to get the latest updated on news, weather, sports, movie releases, blogs, gardening, food recipes or information from your favorite website. Once you start using feeds the possibilities are endless. Webmasters as well as users benefit greatly from these feeds.

Google groups are free services used for group discussions. You can review Google groups by using RSS feeds. You can select your favorite group and add the following code "/feed/msgs.xml" at the end of the Google Group URL and get updates as they occur whenever a new post is made to that particular newsgroup.

The information we've discussed above will possibly give you some different ideas on how you may use RSS feeds in the promotion of your business opportunity. Take some time and do some research on how feeds can help you promote your online business. Remember feeds are good for the website owners as well as for the online users.

If you feel you're somewhat challenged on understanding how RSS feeds work, seek the help of your marketing professional. If the professional doesn't understand feeds and the benefits feeds provide to your overall marketing experience, then consider getting a different person to assist you in this important part of marketing. By understanding this part of the marketing process, you will see some positive results rather quickly.
